A Hero for everyone!

DTLA newest little gem: Hero Shop

Obsession isn’t all that bad.

Being completely focused with one thing and thinking about it non stop might sound crazy to some people but on the other hand, it can really make you an expert in whatever the object of your obsession is.

In this case, chef Eric Park has one thing on his mind.

Sandwiches.

Specifically the Bahn Mi. Which is just a Vietnamese sandwich.

This self proclaimed food obsessed Chef has a new shop in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. This much needed breath of fresh pork infused-fish saucy air was just what downtown needed. Chef Eric did us Angelinos a big favor by opening up this incredibly convenient sandwich shop. There really isn’t another place that offers such a delectable selection of sandwiches, bowls featuring yummy meats, coconut rice with perfectly sous vide eggs and pickled vegetables.

These Bahn Mi he makes are to die for, and better than ones I’ve had anywhere, including Vietnam. Imagine a sandwich that took traditional ingredients and raised the quality by 100%. Say goodbye to the bland store bought headcheese and dry meat and say hello to the succulent BBQ Pork with creamy pate, spicy homemade pickled vegetables, fresh herbs and perfectly crispy locally baked bread.

No short cuts, no frills, and no nonsense. Everything here is done from scratch and is evident in the final product. Chef Eric Stays true to the concept of the shop which is paying homage to the classic Bahn Mi while elevating it to a new level by using the best quality ingredients and old school techniques of braising and pickling.

Along with the new Hero Shop, Chef Eric has two other places that he owns and operates. Black Hogg and Sopressata in Silverlake, where by day is a sandwich shop that offers terrific lunch fare and transforms into the ultra simplistic rustic chefy eatery by night. An average day starts with him coming into Sopressata, checking in with the gang, then making his way downtown to the Hero Shop where the bevy of fellow Bahn Mi lovers have congregated, then finishing his night at Black Hogg for dinner service, all while coming up with interesting new concepts along the way.

His experiences with his grandmother growing up cooking by her side and the years he spent living in NYC have beautifully amalgamated and transformed his style and perception of food to be the unapologetic and honest flavor profile that is definitely his own.

It’s one of the hardest things to do one thing, and to do it right. But Chef Eric has it figured out, by staying away from trends and creating from his own inspiration.

This is truly the chef to watch.

Chef Eric, Angelinos are hungry!

p.s. check out the sous vide eggs!
