From the Town of Sandwich to Your Fingertips

04 Jan From the Town of Sandwich to Your Fingertips

It is said that the word Sandwich comes from the title of the English nobleman John Montagu from the town of Sandwich in the eighteen hundreds.  He was a compulsive gambler who was so enthralled in his game that he had no time to eat, which resulted in him asking his servants to bring him a plate of roast beef with two pieces of bread so that he wouldn’t miss his game and keep his fingers clean.

I doubt Mr. Montagu in his state realized he would be indirectly responsible for coining one of the most famously celebrated culinary words, ever.

So compact, versatile and easy. I can put anything in between two pieces of good bread and have a party. But sometimes I like to put a few things in my sandwich that will really cause a scene.

You can kiss the days of Wonder Bread and silly bologna goodbye.

Long ago I discovered this sandwich on accident while taking a break from my window shopping spree at a café in Beverly Hills and have recreated and tweaked it over the years. The simplicity of the ingredients makes for such a complex flavor that really catches you off guard.

It’s a chicken sandwich with sundried tomato basil and garlic spread. Basil, garlic and tomato working in perfect harmony. Who would have ever thought? Those Italians might be on to something…

The key ingredient is the sundried tomato basil and garlic mayo. You could make this stuff and let it hang in the fridge for at least two weeks. It’s so delicious that you’ll find yourself looking for things to dip and spread it onto.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
